Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga focuses on the awakening of the chakras in ascending order beginning with muladhara, the root chakra. This process begins with the practice of pranayama whereby the seeker becomes aware of, and ultimately learns to control, the flow of prana throughout the body. Once prana is adequately controlled the seeker then awakens the kundalini energy which lies dormant in the root chakra in the base of the spine. The seeker directs the rising of this energy through the energy channels. As the energy rises the chakras awaken. With the opening of sahasrara, the crown chakra, the consciousness of the individual merges with the infinite. This is the most dangerous of all yogas because we are siezing control of, and altering, the body's life-force and we are awakening the lower chakras, the powers of which sway most seekers from the ultimate goal of meditation. For these reasons I highly recommend focusing on and awakening the heart center first. This center provides the wisdom, purity and love necessary for the understanding and use of the powers which arise with the opening of the lower chakras. A genuine teacher is absolutely essential to oversee the control of life-force. A mistake or error in judgment can result in serious illness or even death. The powers of existence are not to be taken lightly or misused. Please read the section of this web-site entitled Hatha yoga in order to grasp the concepts of prana and pranayama which literally means the 'control of prana.' Also please reference the section on Raja yoga regarding yama and niyama and the section entitled Teachers. Be wise and careful when it comes to Kundhalini yoga. Errors along this path can have life threatening consequences.
